Building base miles is the cyclist’s equivalent of pouring a strong foundation on which to rest a home, or in our case, a season of performance. It takes time, precision and knowledge.
Ultra-cyclists build more base miles than most. We do it because we need that extra layer in our foundation if we want to go the distance, and perform well.
Building a community also takes time. At BarrUltra we’ve laid down some solid base miles in our first year, with our wheels consistently turning day after day.
In year one we gathered 19 ultra-cycling members across three continents.
Our members have put in over 100,000 miles of training, won multiple races, collected multiple world records, delivered personal bests, some failed to finish, but all have learned valuable ultra-lessons.
Most importantly, with the benefits of mentoring, coaching, connecting and crewing we’ve formed a community.
A community that celebrates, supports, and fuels the love we have for our sport and the desire to get better at it.
Our kit and our team is now recognised and, as hoped, our Experience or Project members have funded two scholarship positions that foster the development of young riders.
The BarrUltra US van and crew supported James Golding – One Step At A Time in Race Across America, arguably the toughest endurance race in the world, and Joe’s 12-hour record attempts in Florida and North Carolina. The BarrUltra Irish van and crew supported Joe in Race Around Poland, Aidan Hegarty in racing from the toe to the tip of Ireland, and Marc in the recent Donegal 555.
When one of us races, we all race.
But like the nature of base miles, there’s always more to do!
We’ll be expanding our zoom discussion-seminar series for our members, with three planned in the Autumn.
Jill will present on ‘The art and science of recovery’ and ‘How to build metabolic flexibility & become a better fat burner.’
Joe’s launching his ‘How-to discussion series’, his first on how to manage pace and performance in a sustained headwind.
Marc is busy planning a Spring training camp and we’re also entertaining the first BarrUltra Epic Ride!
Busy times at BarrUltra but that’s what happens when you’ve got your wheels up to speed and you have a horizon in your sights.
We’re taking on new Racing and Experience members plus one scholarship member so if you’ve got ultra-ambitions, whether a race, a record, or a personal challenge, and need experience, expertise, and community on your side do drop in and chat with us.
But first head over to the membership area and check out the multiple benefits that come with joining the team – your ultra-cycling community.
If you’re not ready to join but need an ultra-cycling coach or a ultra-specific nutrition coach, check out Train with Joe and Nutrition with Jill
